Rape: Police arraign suspect’s mother, one other after PUNCH report

The Ogun State Police Command has taken the mother of one of the suspects, who allegedly raped a 13-year-old virgin while being unconscious, to court following a report on the incident by PUNCH Metro.

PUNCH Metro had reported that the victim, who works as an apprentice nurse after school hours, was approached by one of the gang members while on the way to her workplace on November 16.

It was learnt that the suspect blew an unknown substance into the victim’s eyes, which made her to lose consciousness after she had resisted his advances.

It was gathered that the suspect carried the victim to an uncompleted building in the Baale area of Ajuwon, Ogun State, where his gang members were waiting for him.

The victim, who spoke with PUNCH Metro, said she regained consciousness after the boys had taken their turns to rape her.

The mother of the victim had told our correspondent that the Investigating Police Officer in charge of the case, whose name she gave as Inspector Modupe Ogundipe, allegedly vowed not to have anything to do with the suspects on the grounds that they were notorious and that one of them had just returned from the prison.

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, had denied the claim and informed our correspondent that one of the suspects’ mother had been arrested for aiding the escape of her son.

The mother and one other woman, who allegedly refused to show the police the hideout of the suspects, were arraigned before an Ifo Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

They were arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and felony, which they pleaded not guilty to.

According to the Investigating Police Officer, Modupe Ogundipe, the defendants committed the offences on November 16, 2018 at No. 6 Akinyemi Compound, Baale Akinosi, Ajuwon.

The charges read, “That you, Ololade Agunbiade and Funke Sholadoye, on November 16, 2018, at No. 6 Akinyemi Compound, Baale Akinosi, Ajuwon in the Ifo Magisterial District did conspire among yourselves to commit compound felonies and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Volume 1, Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.

“That you, Ololade Agunbiade and Funke Sholadoye, on the same date and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did commit compound felonies by shielding one Sheriff Agunbiade, who is involved in a case of defilement, from being arrested and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 127 of the Criminal Code, Volume 1, Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.”

The magistrate, N. A. Iroko, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must be regular taxpayers and must have their addresses verified.

She ordered that the accused should be remanded in the Ibara Prison, Abeokuta, pending the perfection of their bail conditions.

Iroko adjourned the case till December 19, 2018 for trial.

However, a source told our correspondent that the DPO of the Ajuwon Police Station, Afolabi Kazeem, was summoned to the state police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta on Monday after The PUNCH’s report.

The source added that the summons prompted the police to arraign the women in court
